The topic can be anything that a speaker wants to talk about. A topic marker is a grammatical particle used to mark the topic of a sentence.
The topic marker -wa roughly corresponds to English ‘as for’.
(Example)
私の仕事は教師です /   わたしの しごとは きょうし です  /   Watashi no shigoto wa kyoushi desu
English
As for my job, (it) is a teacher.   ->   My job is a teacher.
