Becoming Fluent in Japanese through  “Pattern Practice”

Noboru Akuzawa

Born in Japan in 1973. The author of the Japanese Sentence Patterns: Training Book series of original materials for practicing “pattern practice,” an effective method for strengthening the speaking skills of learners of Japanese.

He is also a Japanese language coach who provides online private lessons to help learners of Japanese improve their speaking skills.

With a dream of becoming a researcher of American literature in the future, he studied English for 10 months at an American language school in 1995. He returned to Japan in frustration, not knowing how to improve his English speaking ability.

After returning to Japan, he discovered “Pattern Practice” while trying various approaches to improve his speaking ability, and through Pattern Practice, he succeeded in improving his English speaking ability.

In 2003, he was selected as an Ambassadorial Scholar by the Rotary Foundation of Japan and studied at a graduate school in England, where he completed his master’s degree.

In 2014, he began helping his language exchange partners learn Japanese. He found that many learners of Japanese were at a loss as they did not know how to improve their speaking skills and had no materials to help them do so. In response, he published the Japanese Sentence Patterns: Training Book Series to help learners of Japanese improve their Japanese speaking skills through “pattern practice”. The series includes two unique methods for effectively implementing pattern practice: the Sentence Pattern Method and the read aloud method. The series has been very well received since its release, and as of 2020, more than 5,000 copies have been purchased.

In 2016, he started one-on-one online Japanese language lessons, helping students to improve their Japanese speaking ability significantly in a short period of time through “Pattern Practice”. He also produces and publishes original teaching materials in response to the needs of Japanese language learners, and offers special Japanese coaching programs to help students achieve their goals.
